Matthew 26:36-46
The Agony in the Garden.
26:36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."
26:37 He took along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to feel sorrow and distress.
26:38 Then he said to them, "My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch with me."
26:39 He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet,
not as I will, but as you will."
26:40 When he returned to his disciples he found them asleep. He said to Peter, "So you could not keep watch with me for one hour?
26:41 Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
26:42 Withdrawing a second time, he prayed again, "My Father, if it is not possible that this cup pass without my drinking it, your will be done!"
26:43 Then he returned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open.
26:44 He left them and withdrew again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing again.
26:45 Then he returned to his disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at
hand when the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners.
26:46 Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is at hand."
Mark 15:16-20
Mockery by the Soldiers.
15:16 The soldiers led him away inside the palace, that is, the praetorium, and assembled the whole cohort.
15:17 They clothed him in purple and, weaving a crown of thorns, placed it on him.
15:18 They began to salute him with, "Hail, King of the Jews!"
15:19 and kept striking his head with a reed and spitting upon him. They knelt before him in homage.
15:20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him out to crucify him.
The Way of the Cross.
15:21 They pressed into service a passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander
and Rufus, to carry his cross.
The Crucifixion.
15:22 They brought him to the place of Golgotha (which is translated Place of the Skull).
15:23 They gave him wine drugged with myrrh, but he did not take it.
15:24 Then they crucified him and divided his garments by casting lots for them to see what each should take.
15:25 It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him.
15:26 The inscription of the charge against him read, "The King of the Jews."
15:27 With him they crucified two revolutionaries, one on his right and one on his left.
15:28 )
15:29 Those passing by reviled him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
15:30 save yourself by coming down from the cross."
15:31 Likewise the chief priests, with the scribes, mocked him among themselves and said, "He saved others; he cannot save himself.
15:32 Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe." Those who were crucified with
him also kept abusing him.
Luke 1: 39-56
Mary Visits Elizabeth.
1:39 During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah,
1:40 where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
1:41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit,
1:42 cried out in a loud voice and said, "Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
1:43 And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
1:44 For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
1:45 Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."
The Canticle of Mary.
1:46 And Mary said:
"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
1:47 my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
1:48 For he has looked upon his handmaid's lowliness;
behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.
1:49 The Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
1:50 His mercy is from age to age
to those who fear him.
1:51 He has shown might with his arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart.
1:52 He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly.
1:53 The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty.
1:54 He has helped Israel his servant, remembering his mercy,
1:55 according to his promise to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his descendants forever."
1:56 Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home.
Luke 2:1-14
The Birth of Jesus.
2:1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled.
2:2 This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria.
2:3 So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town.
2:4 And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem,
because he was of the house and family of David,
2:5 to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
2:6 While they were there, the time came for her to have her child,
2:7 and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there
was no room for them in the inn.
2:8 Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock.
2:9 The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear.
2:10 The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
2:11 For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord.
2:12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger."
2:13 And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:
2:14 "Glory to God in the highest
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests."
The Visit of the Shepherds.
2:15 When the angels went away from them to heaven, the shepherds said to one
another, "Let us go, then, to Bethlehem to see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us."
2:16 So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger.
2:17 When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child.
2:18 All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds.
2:19 And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.
2:20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.
The Circumcision and Naming of Jesus.
2:21 When eight days were completed for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the
angel before he was conceived in the womb.
Luke 2: 22 - 38
The Presentation in the Temple.
2:22 When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem
to present him to the Lord,
2:23 just as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,"
2:24 and to offer the sacrifice of "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons," in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.
2:25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the
consolation of Israel, and the holy Spirit was upon him.
2:26 It had been revealed to him by the holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Messiah of the Lord.
2:27 He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to
perform the custom of the law in regard to him,
2:28 he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying:
2:29 "Now, Master, you may let your servant go
in peace, according to your word,
2:30 for my eyes have seen your salvation,
2:31 which you prepared in sight of all the peoples,
2:32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel."
2:33 The child's father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;
2:34 and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel,
and to be a sign that will be contradicted
2:35 (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."
2:36 There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having
lived seven years with her husband after her marriage,
2:37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer.
2:38 And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to
all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.
The Return to Nazareth.
2:39 When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.
2:40 The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.
Luke 2: 41-52
The Boy Jesus in the Temple.
2:41 Each year his parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover,
2:42 and when he was twelve years old, they went up according to festival custom.
2:43 After they had completed its days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it.
2:44 Thinking that he was in the caravan, they journeyed for a day and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances,
2:45 but not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.
2:46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions,
2:47 and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers.
2:48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you
done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety."
2:49 And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"
2:50 But they did not understand what he said to them.
2:51 He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart.
2:52 And Jesus advanced (in) wisdom and age and favor before God and man.
The Death of Jesus.
23:44 It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon
23:45 because of an eclipse of the sun. Then the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.
23:46 Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit"; and when he had said this he breathed his last.
23:47 The centurion who witnessed what had happened glorified God and said, "This man was innocent beyond doubt."
23:48 When all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts;
23:49 but all his acquaintances stood at a distance, including the women who had followed him from Galilee and saw these events.
John 19:1-30
19:1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged.
19:2 And the soldiers wove a crown out of thorns and placed it on his head, and clothed him in a purple cloak,
19:3 and they came to him and said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they struck him repeatedly.
19:4 Once more Pilate went out and said to them, "Look, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find no guilt in him."
19:5 So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak. And he said to them, "Behold, the man!"
19:6 When the chief priests and the guards saw him they cried out, "Crucify him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves
and crucify him. I find no guilt in him."
19:7 The Jews answered, "We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God."
19:8 Now when Pilate heard this statement, he became even more afraid,
19:9 and went back into the praetorium and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" Jesus did not answer him.
19:10 So Pilate said to him, "Do you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you and I have power to crucify you?"
19:11 Jesus answered (him), "You would have no power over me if it had not been given to you from above. For this
reason the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin."
19:12 Consequently, Pilate tried to release him; but the Jews cried out, "If you release him, you are not a Friend of Caesar.
Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar."
19:13 When Pilate heard these words he brought Jesus out and seated him on the judge's bench in the place called Stone
Pavement, in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
19:14 It was preparation day for Passover, and it was about noon. And he said to the Jews, "Behold, your king!"
19:15 They cried out, "Take him away, take him away! Crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your king?" The chief
priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar."
19:16 Then he handed him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus,
The Crucifixion of Jesus.
19:17 and carrying the cross himself he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha.
19:18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle.
19:19 Pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read, "Jesus the Nazorean, the King of the Jews."
19:20 Now many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was
near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
19:21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write 'The King of the Jews,' but that he said, 'I am the King of the Jews.'"
19:22 Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."
19:23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four shares, a share
for each soldier. They also took his tunic, but the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top down.
19:24 So they said to one another, "Let's not tear it, but
cast lots for it to see whose it will be," in order that the
passage of scripture might be fulfilled (that says):
"They divided my garments among them,
and for my vesture they cast lots." This is what the soldiers
did.
19:25 Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.
19:26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son."
19:27 Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
19:28 After this, aware that everything was now finished, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I thirst."
19:29 There was a vessel filled with common wine. So they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop and put it up to his mouth.
19:30 When Jesus had taken the wine, he said, "It is finished." And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.
II: THE MISSION IN JERUSALEM
Peter's Speech at Pentecost.
2:14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them, "You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem. Let this be known to you, and listen to my words.
2:15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning.
2:16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
2:17 'It will come to pass in the last days,' God says,
'that I will pour out a portion of my spirit upon all flesh.
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your young men shall see visions,
your old men shall dream dreams.
2:18 Indeed, upon my servants and my handmaids
I will pour out a portion of my spirit in those days,
and they shall prophesy.
2:19 And I will work wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below:
blood, fire, and a cloud of smoke.
2:20 The sun shall be turned to darkness,
and the moon to blood,
before the coming of the great and splendid day of the Lord,
2:21 and it shall be that everyone shall be saved who calls on
the name of the Lord.'
2:22 You who are Israelites, hear these words. Jesus the Nazorean was a man commended to you by
God with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs, which God worked through him in your midst, as you yourselves know.
2:23 This man, delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God, you killed, using lawless men to crucify him.
2:24 But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it.
2:25 For David says of him:
'I saw the Lord ever before me,
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
2:26 Therefore my heart has been glad and my tongue has exulted;
my flesh, too, will dwell in hope,
2:27 because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld,
nor will you suffer your holy one to see corruption.
2:28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.'
2:29 My brothers, one can confidently say to you about the patriarch David that he died and was buried,
and his tomb is in our midst to this day.
2:30 But since he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne,
2:31 he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that neither was he abandoned to the
netherworld nor did his flesh see corruption.
2:32 God raised this Jesus; of this we are all witnesses.
2:33 Exalted at the right hand of God, he received the promise of the holy Spirit from the Father and
poured it forth, as you (both) see and hear.
2:34 For David did not go up into heaven, but he himself
said:
'The Lord said to my Lord,
"Sit at my right hand
2:35 until I make your enemies your footstool."'
2:36 Therefore let the whole house of Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified."
2:37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they asked Peter and the other apostles, "What are we to do, my brothers?"
2:38 Peter (said) to them, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the
forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the holy Spirit.
2:39 For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call."
2:40 He testified with many other arguments, and was exhorting them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation."
2:41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand persons were added that day.
Pursuit.
15:4 Uzziah sent messengers to Betomasthaim, to Choba and Kona, and to the whole country of Israel to report what had happened, that all might fall upon the enemy and destroy them.
15:5 On hearing this, all the Israelites, with one accord, attacked them and cut them down as far as Choba. Even those from Jerusalem and the rest of the mountain region took part in this, for they too had been notified of the happenings in the camp of their enemies. The Gileadites and the Galileans struck the enemy's flanks with great slaughter, even beyond Damascus and its territory.
15:6 The remaining inhabitants of Bethulia swept down on the camp of the Assyrians, plundered it, and acquired great riches.
15:7 The Israelites who returned from the slaughter took possession of what was left, till the towns and villages in the mountains and on the plain were crammed with the enormous quantity of booty they had seized.
15:8 The high priest Joakim and the elders of the Israelites, who dwelt in Jerusalem, came to see for themselves the good things that the Lord had done for Israel, and to meet and congratulate Judith.
15:9 When they had visited her, all with one accord blessed
her, saying:
"You are the glory of Jerusalem,
the surpassing joy of Israel;
You are the splendid boast of our people.
15:10 With your own hand you have done all this;
You have done good to Israel,
and God is pleased with what you have wrought.
May you be blessed by the Lord Almighty
forever and ever!"
And all the people answered, "Amen!"
15:11 For thirty days the whole populace plundered the camp, giving Judith the tent of Holofernes, with all his silver, his couches, his dishes, and all his furniture, which she accepted. She harnessed her mules, hitched her wagons to them, and loaded these things on them.
15:12 All the women of Israel gathered to see her; and they blessed her and performed a dance in her honor. She took branches in her hands and distributed them to the women around her,
15:13 and she and the other women crowned themselves with garlands of olive leaves. At the head of all the people, she led the women in the dance, while the men of Israel followed in their armor, wearing garlands and singing hymns.
