Mt The Entry Into Jerusalem. 21:1 When they drew near Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 21:2 saying to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find an ass tethered, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them here to me. 21:3 And if anyone should say anything to you, reply, 'The master has need of them.' Then he will send them at once." 21:4 This happened so that what had been spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled: 21:5 "Say to daughter Zion, 'Behold, your king comes to you, meek and riding on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.'" 21:6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had ordered them. 21:7 They brought the ass and the colt and laid their cloaks over them, and he sat upon them. 21:8 The very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road. 21:9 The crowds preceding him and those following kept crying out and saying: "Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest." 21:10 And when he entered Jerusalem the whole city was shaken and asked, "Who is this?" 21:11 And the crowds replied, "This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth in Galilee." The Cleansing of the Temple. 21:12 Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all those engaged in selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. 21:13 And he said to them, "It is written: 'My house shall be a house of prayer,' but you are making it a den of thieves." 21:14 The blind and the lame approached him in the temple area, and he cured them. 21:15 When the chief priests and the scribes saw the wondrous things he was doing, and the children crying out in the temple area, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they were indignant 21:16 and said to him, "Do you hear what they are saying?" Jesus said to them, "Yes; and have you never read the text, 'Out of the mouths of infants and nurslings you have brought forth praise'?" 21:17 And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany, and there he spent the night. The Cursing of the Fig Tree. 21:18 When he was going back to the city in the morning, he was hungry. 21:19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went over to it, but found nothing on it except leaves. And he said to it, "May no fruit ever come from you again." And immediately the fig tree withered. 21:20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed and said, "How was it that the fig tree withered immediately?" 21:21 Jesus said to them in reply, "Amen, I say to you, if you have faith and do not waver, not only will you do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, 'Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' it will be done. 21:22 Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive." The Authority of Jesus Questioned. 21:23 When he had come into the temple area, the chief priests and the elders of the people approached him as he was teaching and said, "By what authority are you doing these things? And who gave you this authority?" 21:24 Jesus said to them in reply, "I shall ask you one question, and if you answer it for me, then I shall tell you by what authority I do these things. 21:25 Where was John's baptism from? Was it of heavenly or of human origin?" They discussed this among themselves and said, "If we say 'Of heavenly origin,' he will say to us, 'Then why did you not believe him?' 21:26 But if we say, 'Of human origin,' we fear the crowd, for they all regard John as a prophet." 21:27 So they said to Jesus in reply, "We do not know." He himself said to them, "Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things. The Parable of the Two Sons. 21:28 "What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, 'Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.' 21:29 He said in reply, 'I will not,' but afterwards he changed his mind and went. 21:30 The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, 'Yes, sir,' but did not go. 21:31 Which of the two did his father's will?" They answered, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. 21:32 When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him. The Parable of the Tenants. 21:33 "Hear another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey. 21:34 When vintage time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce. 21:35 But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat, another they killed, and a third they stoned. 21:36 Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones, but they treated them in the same way. 21:37 Finally, he sent his son to them, thinking, 'They will respect my son.' 21:38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.' 21:39 They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. 21:40 What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?" 21:41 They answered him, "He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times." 21:42 Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the scriptures: 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes'? 21:43 Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit. 21:44 ( The one who falls on this stone will be dashed to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.)" 21:45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they knew that he was speaking about them. 21:46 And although they were attempting to arrest him, they feared the crowds, for they regarded him as a prophet. |
Mk The Entry Into Jerusalem. 11:1 When they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples 11:2 and said to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately on entering it, you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. 11:3 If anyone should say to you, 'Why are you doing this?' reply, 'The Master has need of it and will send it back here at once.'" 11:4 So they went off and found a colt tethered at a gate outside on the street, and they untied it. 11:5 Some of the bystanders said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?" 11:6 They answered them just as Jesus had told them to, and they permitted them to do it. 11:7 So they brought the colt to Jesus and put their cloaks over it. And he sat on it. 11:8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. 11:9 Those preceding him as well as those following kept crying out: "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 11:10 Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!" 11:11 He entered Jerusalem and went into the temple area. He looked around at everything and, since it was already late, went out to Bethany with the Twelve. Jesus Curses a Fig Tree. 11:12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany he was hungry. 11:13 Seeing from a distance a fig tree in leaf, he went over to see if he could find anything on it. When he reached it he found nothing but leaves; it was not the time for figs. 11:14 And he said to it in reply, "May no one ever eat of your fruit again!" And his disciples heard it. Cleansing of the Temple. 11:15 They came to Jerusalem, and on entering the temple area he began to drive out those selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. 11:16 He did not permit anyone to carry anything through the temple area. 11:17 Then he taught them saying, "Is it not written: 'My house shall be called a house of prayerfor all peoples'? But you have made it a den of thieves." 11:18 The chief priests and the scribes came to hear of it and were seeking a way to put him to death, yet they feared him because the whole crowd was astonished at his teaching. 11:19 When evening came, they went out of the city. The Withered Fig Tree. 11:20 Early in the morning, as they were walking along, they saw the fig tree withered to its roots. 11:21 Peter remembered and said to him, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered." 11:22 Jesus said to them in reply, "Have faith in God. 11:23 Amen, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it shall be done for him. 11:24 Therefore I tell you, all that you ask for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours. 11:25 When you stand to pray, forgive anyone against whom you have a grievance, so that your heavenly Father may in turn forgive you your transgressions." 11:26 ) The Authority of Jesus Questioned. 11:27 They returned once more to Jerusalem. As he was walking in the temple area, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders approached him 11:28 and said to him, "By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do them?" 11:29 Jesus said to them, "I shall ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 11:30 Was John's baptism of heavenly or of human origin? Answer me." 11:31 They discussed this among themselves and said, "If we say, 'Of heavenly origin,' he will say, '(Then) why did you not believe him?' 11:32 But shall we say, 'Of human origin'?"--they feared the crowd, for they all thought John really was a prophet. 11:33 So they said to Jesus in reply, "We do not know." Then Jesus said to them, "Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things." |
Lk The Entry into Jerusalem. 19:28 After he had said this, he proceeded on his journey up to Jerusalem. 19:29 As he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples. 19:30 He said, "Go into the village opposite you, and as you enter it you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. 19:31 And if anyone should ask you, 'Why are you untying it?' you will answer, 'The Master has need of it.'" 19:32 So those who had been sent went off and found everything just as he had told them. 19:33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying this colt?" 19:34 They answered, "The Master has need of it." 19:35 So they brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks over the colt, and helped Jesus to mount. 19:36 As he rode along, the people were spreading their cloaks on the road; 19:37 and now as he was approaching the slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of his disciples began to praise God aloud with joy for all the mighty deeds they had seen. 19:38 They proclaimed: "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest." 19:39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples." 19:40 He said in reply, "I tell you, if they keep silent, the stones will cry out!" The Lament for Jerusalem. 19:41 As he drew near, he saw the city and wept over it, 19:42 saying, "If this day you only knew what makes for peace--but now it is hidden from your eyes. 19:43 For the days are coming upon you when your enemies will raise a palisade against you; they will encircle you and hem you in on all sides. 19:44 They will smash you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another within you because you did not recognize the time of your visitation." The Cleansing of the Temple. 19:45 Then Jesus entered the temple area and proceeded to drive out those who were selling things, 19:46 saying to them, "It is written, 'My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.'" 19:47 And every day he was teaching in the temple area. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people, meanwhile, were seeking to put him to death, 19:48 but they could find no way to accomplish their purpose because all the people were hanging on his words. |
Jn The Entry into Jerusalem. 12:12 On the next day, when the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 12:13 they took palm branches and went out to meet him, and cried out: "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, (even) the king of Israel." 12:14 Jesus found an ass and sat upon it, as is written: 12:15 "Fear no more, O daughter Zion; see, your king comes, seated upon an ass's colt." 12:16 His disciples did not understand this at first, but when Jesus had been glorified they remembered that these things were written about him and that they had done this for him. 12:17 So the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from death continued to testify. 12:18 This was (also) why the crowd went to meet him, because they heard that he had done this sign. 12:19 So the Pharisees said to one another, "You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the whole world has gone after him." The Coming of Jesus' Hour . 12:20 Now there were some Greeks among those who had come up to worship at the feast. 12:21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, "Sir, we would like to see Jesus." 12:22 Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 12:23 Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 12:24 Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. 12:25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. 12:26 Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me. 12:27 "I am troubled now. Yet what should I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? But it was for this purpose that I came to this hour. 12:28 Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it and will glorify it again." 12:29 The crowd there heard it and said it was thunder; but others said, "An angel has spoken to him." 12:30 Jesus answered and said, "This voice did not come for my sake but for yours. 12:31 Now is the time of judgment on this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. 12:32 And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself." 12:33 He said this indicating the kind of death he would die. 12:34 So the crowd answered him, "We have heard from the law that the Messiah remains forever. Then how can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?" 12:35 Jesus said to them, "The light will be among you only a little while. Walk while you have the light, so that darkness may not overcome you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where he is going. 12:36 While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of the light." After he had said this, Jesus left and hid from them. 12:37 Although he had performed so many signs in their presence they did not believe in him, 12:38 in order that the word which Isaiah the prophet spoke might be fulfilled: "Lord, who has believed our preaching, to whom has the might of the Lord been revealed?" 12:39 For this reason they could not believe, because again Isaiah said: 12:40 "He blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they might not see with their eyes and understand with their heart and be converted, and I would heal them." 12:41 Isaiah said this because he saw his glory and spoke about him. 12:42 Nevertheless, many, even among the authorities, believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not acknowledge it openly in order not to be expelled from the synagogue. 12:43 For they preferred human praise to the glory of God. Recapitulation. 12:44 Jesus cried out and said, "Whoever believes in me believes not only in me but also in the one who sent me, 12:45 and whoever sees me sees the one who sent me. 12:46 I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness. 12:47 And if anyone hears my words and does not observe them, I do not condemn him, for I did not come to condemn the world but to save the world. 12:48 Whoever rejects me and does not accept my words has something to judge him: the word that I spoke, it will condemn him on the last day, 12:49 because I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and speak. 12:50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. So what I say, I say as the Father told me." |
